Surfaces carrying traffic are subject to particularly high levels of mechanical and chemical stress. These include expansion and shrinkage caused by extreme temperature fluctuations, vertical and horizontal stresses and contact with aggressive materials. The problems in the case of bridges, parking decks and multi-storey car parks arise from the varied constructions, fittings and uses: expansion joints, ramps and thresholds, doors and gates, crash barriers, etc.
